Opening match of the World Cup. Iury Gazinsky of the host nation scores the first goal of the tournament and sets the team cup for an unexpected 5-0 rout over Saudi Arabia and and even more unexpected run into quarterfinals

June 15th, 2018, Fisht Olympic Stadium, Sochi
Longtime Real Madrid teammates, now rivals, shake hands before the coin toss. Spain and Portugal would amaze the world with an exiting 3-3 tie where Cristiano Ronaldo scored an amazing hat trick to save his team from defeat. Both teams would later disappoint by losing in the round of 16

June 16th, 2018, Otkritie Arena, Moscow
Iceland’s Halldórrsson stops a penalty kick from Argentina’s great Lionel Messi. It was a bad start to an ugly road for Argentina's greatest. Although not with their football, Iceland still managed to leave a bigger impact in the tournament as their 'Viking Clap' found it's way into many other countries

Mexico's historic captain Rafa Marquez puts on the captain’s armband as he takes the field for his 5th World Cup. He played in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018. He matches Gianluigi Buffon, Lothar Matthäus, and Anotnio Carvajal as thinly players to have played in as many World Cups

England celebrates Harry Kane’s winning goal. The second in a long road that would almost bring it all coming home.

Willy Caballero of Argentina hides his face in shame after his horrible mistake gifted Croatia's Ante Rebic the first goal of the game. It was no upset as Croatia fought all the way to the finals and finishing in second place, earning themselves the silver medals.

Sheridan Shaqiri celebrates the winning goal for Switzerland and sealing the victory against Serbia. The Swiss national celebrated with strong emotions not only for his team but also as a form of revenge for his Albanian parents. He would later be reprimanded because of his celebration, deemed to be an Albanian nationalist gesture.

Tony Kroos celebrates Germany’s agonic victory over Sweden. The extra-time goal would see Germany victorious over Sweden. Wining this game wouldn't be enough and the reigning world champions would shamefully depart early in the first round as Sweden made it through to the elimination stages.

Panamanian fans celebrates with Felipe Baloy after he had just scored his country’s first ever goal in a World Cup. An entire country celebrated regardless of beings goals down to England. Pure joy regardless of of the situation

Marcos Rojo literally and figuratively carrying Lionel Messi and Argentina to the round of 16. Unfortunately for them, they would meet the French, who would go on to win it all and become World Champions

Korean players and coaching staff huddle in the center after their agonic victory over the then reigning World Champions Germany and eliminating from the tournament. Once again the course of the last champion strikes again, and sees the previous World Champions have an early exit in the first round.

Mexico wouldn't be enough to stop the pentacampeao verde amarela. Neymar and Paulinho celebrate Brazil’s victory and passage into quarterfinals
